Fair question. As fans of the BSU (Bill Simmons Universe) we were reminded that we watch and speak sports the same exact way.
Case in point: we built an app and named it Heat Check, then kept recognizing the pattern while listening to our favorite Simmons shows. Same two words, same meaning, same love for a guy who’s feeling it. So we went back and counted: 448 mentions across eleven years, every single one logged below.
So this site was spun up to highlight that, and yes, to hopefully form a bridge to collaborate on our app, Heat Check.
the Heater Board: live heaters, ranked
What is Heat Check?
Our live stats app, built for League Pass people. It watches every NBA and MLB game at once (NFL this August), spots who’s genuinely hot, and alerts you while the heater is still live. Typically faster than the broadcast.
Who it’s for
People who watch for the moments: group chats, box score readers, the occasional casual prop sweat. It’s a fun way to see the game and spot potential betting opportunities without pretending to be one of those pompous edge apps. No betting in it. It just tells you who’s actually hot, while it’s happening.

The Bill Simmons Podcast — 241The Rewatchables — 207
The Rewatchables asterisk: of the show’s 207 spoken mentions,
142 happen inside the Dion Waiters Award segment — the recurring
“best heat check in the movie” category — and 65 are organic
riffs in normal movie talk. On top of that, in 263 more episodes the award
is handed out but the phrase never survives the machine transcript (the
transcripts mangled the award name into thirty-odd spellings — all corrected
to “Dion Waiters” on this page). Toggle those on above to see them as ghost entries.
Where a transcript double-prints a moment, the ledger shows the clip once and counts
each utterance (the ×2 tags). The official count stays
spoken utterances only — spot-checked against live transcripts, so every
total on this page is a verified floor.

“And he can. It's who he is. Yeah, you almost feel like he's like a heat check guy. Yeah, all game. Yeah. And in the last game, you know, the 45, I mean, come on, he scored half the team's points. Like, he willed a game for the New York Knicks to win a world championship. Yeah, so I did a pot on…”

This is too much money for somebody who's a defensive liability, who just seems really heat checky, and I don't know if there's a next year and I like him. I've been a huge defender of him the last couple of years, but I have not liked what I've seen this year house.”
“…than maybe people think. They're not going to, they're, they're so deep, they're never going to throw away a game. You're always going to have to go at them and beat them for four quarters. They have these random heat check guys. I just kind of like the team. You seem disgusted.”

“…year. I think you might be the only person I know who likes him more than I do. I do see a scenario where he just rips off a month straight of games like the one we saw yesterday. I don't like, to me, he's beyond a heat check guy. He just might be really good.”
“You know, they don't have, if Harden doesn't get going, they don't have that kind of random heat check guy other than Maxie. “Dion Waiters Award for Best Heat Check is obviously Deborah Winger. I think she's in three scenes. Yeah. Shout out to Sebastian Stan, though, for just being the crazy guy at the beginning for a minute and a half. Yep. Now he's Tommy Lee. All right.”
“…to write and direct the conversation, to direct a San Francisco opera production, and to write the screenplay for the Great Gatsby. And Paramount's like, great, let's go. Just only one opera? You sure? Kind of a heat check from Coppola, right?”

“…with newer movies. I think it takes a while for the internet to start making up stuff about who else was involved. So when it's only 12 years, there's only the actual info. The Dion Waiters Award given to the biggest heat check performance. I mean, is Emily Blunt even eligible? No, she's not eligible. So then it's obviously Stanley Tucci. There's no other choice.”

“He's not eligible. Please explain this. Every time I think I understand this award, we change the definition of it. No, we're not changing anything. It's a heat check award. It can't be an integral part of the movie. It has to be somebody that comes in hot. Okay.”
“…they couldn't have Regina King's character and Lisa Bonnet's character. Only one NBC daughter gets to live. It was some bullshit. And it has to be Regina King. We're behind schedule. The Dion Waiters Award. Best Heat Check Performance by a Roll Player. Tough category.”

He's a, he's a little bit heat checky, but he's the type right team. You can initiate offense with him sometimes. He's a little bit heat checky, but he's the type of guy they just didn't have last year. And I don't know.”
“…the NBA, he's one of those four guys that has shot over 40% from three on over seven attempts per game. Heald, Robinsonal Robinson Curry Thompson. So ridiculous company for him to be in. “third quarter was outrageous. I mean, that was really like, I was just, we could, you talk and then I'll go after you. But like, I was thinking about him with the heat check guards on big stages. “I've never been to a game that had more heat checks because Mitchell had a heat check. Clarkson had 21 in eight minutes in the first half. Mann and Reggie Jackson both had a heat check. Then Beverly had like a mini heat check where he made all these threes in a row. And it was, it was one of the weirdest games I've ever been to. And you know, is why the NBA is so random now. “it's going in when he's shooting it. I didn't always feel that way. I always felt like he was more of a heat check three guy. “They don't have enough talent. They were doing a Beaubon-KP-Twin Towers thing in the fourth quarter, which I was kind of digging, by the way. But it was like, that's how desperate they were. It's not like they had some heat check to come. It's little similar to the celtics where it's like all right you look down the bench it's like there's grant williams there's semi ojale there's trey burke you know at some point you're built around one guy…”

“Like as an embarrassing uncle goes. Is Marley not eligible for Dion Waiters? You know, he's good. But I didn't think that he was like a heat check, you know, kind of performance. I think he was more of like a solid role player. But I'll allow you. We can nominate him. Okay.”
“Mr. Spell was elite. Good heat check from Spell. Great work by the Etchusketch also in this movie. Got to say. Good call. That was hardcore when he drew it. Yeah. That was rough.”
“Go to Jane Fonda. Hey, Jane, any interest? She turned the film off and the quote was, it's a piece of capitalist rip-off bullshit. She was in a permanent heat check at that point of her. And then Shirley McLean said, no thanks. And has talked about how she really regrets it. And they finally ended up settling on Ellen Burstyn. And then the director, Arthur Penn, said no.”
“Call it the Kendrick Nunn Award then. Oh, he doesn't deserve an award. Yeah. Dion Waiters was actually a good heat check guy once upon a time. “It's goosebumps. Tomorrow is like, whatever. That's great. That's great. Dion Waiters, this is a tough one because everybody's in the movie too much to count as a heat check person. One of the awards is the Dion Waiters award for somebody who's not in the movie that much, but when they're in it, it's a huge heat check and they make a bunch of threes. He's in that movie for, I don't know, 11 minutes. Would you say 10 minutes? Did you ever see any of those running totals for the Academy Awards?”
“Great job, Doyle. He could be a symbol of America, according to some people. Yeah, up to nine and a half. Nine and a half, too, he's out of ten. The Dion Waiters Award, best heat check performance. I can't say Anna Pacquin because I didn't like her performance. I can't give it to Clay Davis because he's Clay Davis. I got to say, I had guy who looked like Patrice O'Neill,”
“But I got to watch Bledsoe those first couple years with the Clippers and it was clear that he was something. You know, and athletically, he was a little bit too heat-checky and like overconfident in his own offensive abilities to run a team. And I think that's manifested itself in some bad ways with Milwaukee last season.”

“Or Leon. Yeah, we're going to get to that. Okay. The Dion Waiters Award for Biggest Heat Check. This is tough because it has to be somebody who wasn't in the movie that much. Oh, this is an easy category. Who do you have? But you have a list?”
